The Importance of Preventative Care

catAmericans love their pets, yet in recent years, the number of people bringing their animals in for preventative care has significantly declined. The American Veterinary Medical Association reports in an article published by USA Today, that cat visits have decreased 30% and dog visits 21%, while emergency appointments have been on the rise. Many pet owners assume it is not necessary to come in for annual wellness visits, however, the prognosis for animals with arthritis, thyroid issues, cancer and several other serious health conditions is much more favorable when diagnosed early.

Additionally, many pet parents do not realize that cats are prone to obesity which can lead to diabetes, thyroid problems, heart disease, among other issues. Many people find bringing their feline friend to the vet to be stressful, and therefore, only come under dire circumstances. Yet, cats tend to be good at hiding their pain and discomfort, so it is imperative to get them checked out at least annually. We are proud to be a “Cat Friendly Practice” and follow measures established by the American Association of Feline Practitioners.

In an effort to educate and encourage people on the importance of preventative care, the AVMA has organized an initiative entitled “Partners for Healthy Pets”. Essentially, a visit to the vet at least once a year can be more cost effective in the long run, and help ensure your pet lives a longer life. We recognize as veterinary professionals that the cost of preventative care can deter a lot of people from regular visits to the vet. We offer options to help with that burden. We have several pet insurance plans which can help cover preventative care. Also, Care Credit can be a viable option for help in spreading the cost of medical costs over a pre-determined payment period.

The staff at Rivertown values the special bond you share with your furry family member and want to provide the best care to ensure your pet stays healthy for many years.
