A Special Therapy Dog

finnegan molendaThis is the story of a very special therapy dog. Finnegan, a 3 ½ year old yellow lab, was recently featured in the New Richmond News. I am excited to share this article and the story of Finnegan and the person who loves him most.

Finnegan and his handler, Bob Molenda, volunteer just across the St. Croix River from Stillwater at Westfield Hospital in New Richmond, Wisconsin. We first met Finnegan three years ago shortly after Bob acquired him from his breeder Dr. Fran Smith. He was hoping for a hunting dog.  Instead he got a sweet, gentle soul with big brown eyes and a big heart, perfectly suited for therapy dog training. Bob worked diligently with Finnegan through 45 weeks of obedience training and then 12 weeks of therapy dog training. He is now certified through Therapy Dogs International.  After 50 patient visits, Finnegan achieved his first service badge. When Finnegan comes to Rivertown Animal Hospital for his regular health checkups, Bob often shares stories of the lives Finnegan touches through his hospital visits. More than once his stories have brought tears to my eyes.  Congratulations Bob and Finnegan on your achievements and this beautiful article. Thank you for your generosity of time and spirit to those who need you.
